In just a few short months, this woman will be tying the knot, and since she works in a small office, she decided to invite most of her coworkers. After all, they’re a tight-knit group, and she’s currently finalizing the guest list.
However, she has one coworker named Jane who’s proving to be hard to accommodate. For some context, she and Jane get along just fine, but they aren’t very close.
In terms of diet, her coworker also has a ton of super-specific restrictions. For instance, Jane is vegan, gluten-free, and has a lot of common allergies – including nuts and soy.
“Whenever we have office lunches or potlucks, it’s always a bit of a challenge to accommodate her, and sometimes, she just brings her own food because it’s easier,” she explained.
This means that crafting her wedding menu with Jane’s dietary restrictions in mind has become extremely challenging. She tried working with her caterer on this, but she realized just how tough – not to mention expensive – creating dishes that Jane could safely eat would really be.
“And I was already stretching my budget, and the thought of spending extra money to accommodate just one guest felt overwhelming,” she added.
That’s why she ultimately decided to exclude Jane. In other words, she didn’t invite her coworker to her nuptials.
Yes, she felt bad about this, yet she realized that they really were not very close friends. So, she’d rather save herself the stress and extra costs.
Still, after making this decision, she did not mention anything about it in the office. Then, once word spread that she was inviting other colleagues, Jane caught on that she wasn’t invited to the event.

This pushed her coworker to confront her, and Jane seemed genuinely hurt. Her coworker claimed to think that they were actually friends. Plus, Jane even said that she would’ve happily brought her own food if that was the only problem.
Since then, things at her job have been pretty tense, too. Some of her other coworkers have begun giving her the cold shoulder, and now, she feels like she might’ve been the jerk in this situation.
“I didn’t want to make Jane feel excluded, but I also didn’t think she’d want to come if I couldn’t accommodate her diet,” she vented.
Did she have a right to invite whoever she wanted to her wedding? Or was it wrong to exclude only one coworker?
