Brussels sprouts are America’s most hated vegetable. But the funny thing is that they are actually a staple at holiday dinners, even though they might be mostly left untouched.
Why do people dislike brussels sprouts so much? Many people may have had negative experiences with them as kids when their parents tried to get them to eat their greens. Or the sprouts were improperly cooked and just insanely bitter, leaving a bad taste in one’s mouth.
Well, one TikToker named Lloyd Rose (@plantcrazii) has a way of making restaurant-style brussels sprouts in six easy steps that are genuinely pleasant to the taste buds.
Because honestly, everything somehow just tastes better when it’s from a restaurant. Or when it appears to be restaurant-made.
“You’ll have the star side dish at any gathering, any Thanksgiving, or holiday dinner as of today! Not everyone can execute restaurant-style brussels sprouts from home, but you will be that star,” Lloyd wrote in the caption of his viral video. So far, the video has over five million views.
One of the secrets to successfully cooking this vegetable is using a preheated baking pan. So the first step is to place a large baking tray into the oven and preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
The second step is to rinse your sprouts thoroughly, remove the brown ends, and cut them horizontally into two.
Next, transfer them to a large bowl and season them generously with some extra-virgin olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Once you have seasoned the sprouts, carefully remove the baking tray from the oven. Be careful; it’s hot!
Grease the pan with more olive oil and place the sprouts face-down on the pan. Bake for fifteen minutes or until the surface of the sprouts that are faced down has a charred look to them. Then, flip them over and cook until the other side is charred as well.
When that’s done, remove them from the oven, throw them back into the same large bowl, and mix in your desired amount of balsamic glaze, cayenne pepper, and salt.
If the sprouts have cooled down while dressing them, put them back in the oven for a few minutes, so you can serve them fresh and hot. And there you have it! Enjoy your beautiful restaurant-style brussels sprouts.
