Two years ago, this guy started dating a girl named Rebecca, and at first, it was a very no-strings-attached kind of thing they had going.
But then it dawned on the two of them that it wasn’t so simple to be casual, as they had developed intense feelings for one another. They began officially dating from there.
“She was practically what I dreamed of in a woman: kind, smart, career-focused, and she was gorgeous. All of that good stuff,” he explained.
When the day came to introduce Rebecca to his loved ones, he couldn’t wait to see what they thought about the girl of his dreams.
Rebecca easily got along with his loved ones, but she was weird with his dad. He didn’t find that strange since his dad hardly is a people person, and he’s not close to his dad/doesn’t value his opinion.
Over time, Rebecca began to steer clear of his family. If he mentioned his loved ones were getting together and extended an invitation to Rebecca, she would always find a way to bail.
Growing skeptical, he questioned Rebecca about whether one of his family members had insulted her in some way.
She insisted that wasn’t the case, but Rebecca wasn’t forthcoming about why she was avoiding his family. He pressed her further, and she finally caved.
“She said my dad was an old long-time fling, and they had their relationship [until] my stepmom came into the picture,” he added.
“She said they talked in private when I introduced them again, and he told her not to tell me since I would have broken up with her.”
“I felt disgusted and just told her to leave so I could gather my thoughts. She tried explaining herself, but I just couldn’t even look at her. She left and just asked not to end our relationship.”
He was furious and phoned up his dad, who confirmed that he slept with Rebecca in the past. His dad maintained he shouldn’t dump Rebecca over such a minor detail.
He demanded to know why his dad felt the need to keep that secret from him, and his dad said it wasn’t his responsibility to spill the beans. Feeling like he wasn’t getting anywhere, he just hung up the phone.
He spent the next two weeks mulling over the best course of action. In the end, he chose to dump Rebecca.
Every moment he looked at Rebecca, he was consumed by thoughts of her and his dad. He was a wreck when he broke up with her, and he started to cry.
Rebecca collected her belongings from his home and took them with her, and they have not spoken since then.
His siblings are furious with him for letting such a great girl go, but he doesn’t think they’re showing him any sympathy.
“I’m just wondering If I was wrong,” he continued. “I mean, it was a long time ago; should I have kept going since our relationship was practically perfect?”
