This 30-year-old man has known his girlfriend, Kelly, 29, for a decade, and they’ve been dating for four years. Kelly has autism, and one of her main struggles has been with food.
Since they started dating, though, she’s been more adventurous and willing to try new foods. She didn’t like eating specific kinds of vegetables, but she would eat them if they were blended into meals or chopped up into tiny pieces or spirals.
Not long ago, his brother, Kevin, 35, proposed to his girlfriend, Laura, with whom he’d been in a relationship for three years. Kevin reached out to him and said he wanted to gather everyone together for an announcement he wanted to make.
Since he has a passion for cooking, Kevin asked him if he’d be willing to host a dinner for their family at his house. He happily agreed and planned to cook a Japanese-themed meal.
“For the main dish, I made ramen, including the noodles and broth, from scratch. It had to be chicken as Kelly doesn’t really like beef or pork, and since my mother also doesn’t eat pork. For Kelly’s portion, I added some extra veggies (zucchini, carrots, and sweetcorn) since she is not fond of eggs,” he said.
He served everyone else ramen with an egg, and Kelly was the only one whose ramen didn’t have an egg. But all of the food was filling enough for everyone, and he also prepped many appetizers like onigiri, yakitori skewers, and tempura.
“Within the first half an hour of her being there, Laura kept picking on Kelly and kept saying she couldn’t say she likes ramen because her version is not authentic (none of us are Asian or have any ties to Asia, if it matters),” he explained.
Understandably, this hurt Kelly’s feelings, and he noticed that she began eating much more slowly than everyone else, which she does when stressed out.
“Then, Laura tried to grab some of Kelly’s ramen to try to prove a point, so Kelly freaked out since she really doesn’t like sharing food that’s already on her plate,” he shared.
After that, the tension escalated to a fight between Kelly and Laura. Eventually, Kelly burst into tears because the situation was too much for her.
At this point, he told Laura and his brother to get out. Their parents were horrified by Laura’s antics toward Kelly and carefully insinuated that they felt like Laura should say sorry for her rude behavior.
His brother and Laura agreed to leave, but a while later, he called him to say that he was a jerk for making them leave.
According to his brother, he ruined the whole point of the dinner, which was so that the entire family could gather together to hear the news that his brother and Laura were going to have a baby. Plus, his brother said he was angry that their mother told him Laura behaved inappropriately.
What advice would you give him?
